Climate & Itinerary Changes

The combination of Newfoundland and Fogo Island’s northern location, rugged coastal landscapes, surreal seascapes and the Atlantic Ocean makes these island like no other places on earth. The islands’ climate can be as prolific as their terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that can bring sun, wind, fog, sleet and rain all in the same day (or hour!). Please be sure to bring warm layers and waterproof gear for every day of the trip. In addition, the forces of nature might result in mid-trip itinerary changes, but rest assured your Backroads Trip Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.

Ferry Crossing

You will travel 1½ hours on the Atlantic Ocean by public ferry to access the wonders of Fogo Island. Be prepared for the possibility of wet foggy conditions and bring seasickness medication if you think you’ll need it.

This trip stays two nights at the traditional Fishers’ Loft Inn. This property was chosen for its proximity to Backroads’ favorite hiking routes and for its fantastic views, though it offers a simpler stay and more casual services than typical Backroads accommodations. The inn’s buildings and interiors reflect the tangible and aesthetic heritage of Newfoundland, particularly the local architecture and artisans.

On Fogo Island you will stay at the Fogo Island Inn, a premeire hotel, known for its award-winning world-class architecture. Stunning views and traditional Newfoundland hospitality make this stay a treasure.
